The Need: Since 1999, KHT has had many successes in enabling more Karen children to go to school and complete their education. However, few can afford the cost of progressing onto university. The Thai government offers a loan scheme to pay for tuition fees, but Karen families cannot afford to support their children with other costs such as living expenses and learning materials.

"If it was not for this scholarship, the university would ask me to leave because I could not pay either the tuitions or the charges to maintain my student status. I was very fortunate to obtain a KHT scholarship."
- Nootsabar Pranomporn, KHT Scholar

The Project: The chance of a place at vocational college or university is the passport to future employment. Every year, KHT supports talented students with scholarships that enable them to attend university and study programmes as diverse as Nursing, Computer Science, Teaching and Business Administration. Scholars are personally selected according to their means and academic ability, and are monitored and supported throughout their time at university.

The Impact: Scholarships offer life-changing opportunities for those that come from marginalised communities within Mae Hong Son, and the chance to pursue a career that can lift generations out of the cycle of poverty. They also help to develop whole communities; many KHT scholars choose to return to their original villages, passing on their skills and talents to the next generation as teachers and mentors.
