Home Our Projects Tractors
So far this project has:
  • Provided a tractor that can be loaned by villages at no cost to them except food for the driver and fuel.
  • Ploughed over 600 rice fields and dug 350 canals.

The Karen hill tribes live in remote areas of north west Thailand. As subsistence farmers they rely on their crops for food and income. The rains in that part of the world are very heavy, flooding their rice fields and destroying the irrigation systems and houses. A tractor is needed to clear the land of heavy timbers, 'till' land that has been unproductive through flooding in the past and rebuild irrigation systems.

Considerable research has been undertaken to establish the size of tractor that would be most helpful to aid income generation to the Karen people. An Anglo Thai New Holland 6610 4WD was purchased in 2005 by a generous donor. An experienced Karen driver is responsible to the Karen manager, Wichien Bunrachaisawan (Salahae).

Villagers are invited to put in a proposal for hiring the tractor. A survey is done and a proposal written. The specific need of the village is assessed and villages prioritised. It is anticipated that where a tractor has been used, land productivity will increase dramatically and remain productive for up to 20 years.
