Provided 20 buses for villages 10 to 30 kilometres from their nearest secondary school, giving 400 school children access to an education that would otherwise be beyond their reach.
Most villages have a primary school within 10 kms of the village. Secondary schools can be 50 kms away and High schools even further. Official statistics in 2007 show that only 25% of Karen children reach secondary school through lack of funds or facilities.
KHT aims to improve this by providing financial support for school buses, providing improved dormitory facilities and providing food (rice) for children who cannot afford it. In addition a Teacher Training program is planned. Dormitories are often situated in the school grounds or nearby, but they are poorly constructed, overcrowded and under funded.
Thai teachers look after the children but resources are very poor. Children who are lucky enough to get a place at all, often have to live there for several months of the school year because it is too far to go home. KHT helps by improving ventilation, building new extensions and occasionally building a new dormitory.
There have been significant contributions made to this project by the Christadelphian Meal-a-Day foundation and the Open Gate Trust. The Trust would like to thank these contributors for their continued support in this vital work.
Primary and secondary schools are often too far away for the children to walk. An open "songthau" or bus which carries 16/20 children, is run by the village committee.
KHT makes a financial contribution (on average £75 a month) to the village to help with running costs. Without this support, the bus is unlikely to operate and the children have to walk, sometimes 7 kms a day. Many more villages need help.
