In 2008, Nick Spencer, a supporter of the trust, was planning to celebrate his 70th birthday, not with a large party, but by climbing two 7000 metre Himalayan peaks. He chose to donate £35,000 to sparkup an appeal for two specific charities; KHT and the CAIRN Trust who help children in Nepal.
Nick lived in South East Asia for over 30 years and wanted to mark his birthday by raising a significant amount of money for charities working in the countries closest to his heart.
However, due to the political issues surrounding Tibet, Nick was unable to obtain a visa allowing him to enter the country for his climb. With Tibet being virtually inaccessible he was unfortunately forced to abort his proposed plans. Despite this set back though Nick wasn't going to be deterred from his fundraising mission.
Nick then committed himself to climbing Mt. Aconcagua in the southern Andes and on 31st December 2008 he achieved his goal Battling against plummeting temperatures and poor visibility he reached the 6,962m peak, which is something that only 1 in 5 people who attempt the climb manage to achieve.
To date Nick Spencers 70th Appeal has raised around £100,000 for the Karen Hilltribes Trust and the same for the CAIRN trust.
