Many families live in remote villages miles from the schools and with an income of less than £1 a day they cannot afford transport or accommodation costs - so the children stay to work in the rice fields. Having said this, the Karen are desperate to learn - we have even known some children walk over 7 miles every day just to get to school!
One way we can help is to provide free bus services from the most remote Karen villages. They are small open-backed minibuses known locally as 'songthau'. It costs around £1250 to run a bus for the academic year - not only will this get 25 children to school but it will provide a much needed stable income for the bus driver.
Please consider if you can make a donation to support this project. A gift of £50 will pay for 1 child's place on a bus for the whole year. Your help will be hugely appreciated and make a tangible difference to a Karen child's life.
