I have been working for the Karen Hilltribes Trust as their fundraiser for almost 2 years now and have just had the privilege of journeying to northern Thailand to meet the Karen people and get a better understanding of the issues they face. It was an unforgettable time and gave me a real insight into the struggles the Karen people face everyday. Most live below the poverty line and suffer from high levels of typhoid and malaria which are easily preventable, given access to clean water and basic health care. The poverty cycle is made worse by the lack of access to education and employment opportunities.
If we can raise £500 it will pay for a years running cost for a school bus, giving 25 Karen children the chance to go to secondary school and complete their education. Currently 75% of Karen leave school without a full education because schools are too far away and they cannot afford the cost of transport or living in a dormitory.
